Interactive Advertising - History of interactive TV

1953   First interactive TV programme Winky Dink And You starts in the US.
1959   The first telephone call-ins are used on the Today show on NBC.
1973   First public demonstration of a teletext system called Ceefax in the UK.
1974   The world's first videotext system Viewdata is launched in the UK.
1977   Warner Amex launches Qube in Ohio, the first major interactive television service that allows viewers to send messages back to the broadcaster and participate in surveys and votes during TV programmes.
1988   The first interactive children's show What's Your Story launches on the BBC, where viewers can ring in to help decide what happens next.
1990s   A number of channels like MTV in the US and CH4 in the UK put live computer chat-rooms on screen during TV programmes - the first two-screen interactive TV, where viewers use a computer at the same time as watching TV.
1996   BT runs interactive TV trials but closes the service down at the end of the trials.
1997   Sky Digital launches on digital satellite in the UK.
1999   First DAL launched with Unilever, Scottish Power and Ford.
1999   Interactive service 'Open...' launches on Sky Digital.
2000 Mar First interactive ad linking to a DAL launched with Chicken Tonight linking to Unilever's Creative Kitchen DAL.
Jun First interactive channel Sky News Active launches.
2001 Mar ids launches first interactive advertisement on Flextech channels.
Mar Launch of first Mini-DAL with P&G Ariel liquitabs.
Launch of interactive services on Telewest.
May 'Open...' renamed Sky Active
2002 Jan Channel 4 launched interactive advertising on CH4 and E4.
Mar First impulse response ad with First Direct. ids starts offering impulse response ads across the main Flextech channels.
Apr ITV Digital collapses
Oct Launch of Freeview (Consortium between the BBC, BSkyB and Crowncastle who took over the old ITV Digital license)
2003 July Sky launches new WML interactive advertising technology. First WML impulse response ads with Nivea and Lexus.
  Sep Launch of first WML Microsite with P&G Ariel.
  Nov ITV1 hosts its first interactive ad.
2004 Feb Launch of first WML Mini-DAL.
  Jul ZipTV launches with the Honda campaign on Channel 4.
  Sep Channel 5 launched their first interactive advertising campaign.
  Nov Channel 4 launch (on Sky platform) their first interactive campaign.
2005 Sep Viacom launch their first interactive campaign on MTV.
2006 Jan Zip Television close business.
  Mar Emuse Absolutely and ITV launch first interactive campaign on DTT with T-Mobile.
  Apr Viacom launch interactive advertising on Nickelodeon.
